Peritoneal Cancer Surgery and Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

Peritoneal Cancer Surgery and Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

Peritoneal Cancers, which include the rare primary peritoneal cancers such as mesotheliomas, and metastatic spread to the peritoneal lining of the abdominal cavity from cancers of the appendix, ovaries, stomach and colon, are often resistant to treatment by conventional surgery and chemotherapy. A special approach called Peritonectomy and Hyperthermic Intra-operative Intra-peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is sometimes the best option for cure or long-term control of the cancer. This involves an extensive removal of the cancer by cytoreductive debulking followed by infusing heated chemotherapy into the abdominal cavity during the surgery itself.

Peritonectomy and HIPEC is available in only a small number of leading cancer centres around the world. Our surgeons have a keen interest and experience in peritoneal cancer treatment and offer this in Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

What Our Patients Are Saying

I went for a colonoscopy, gastroscopy, and hemorrhoidectomy procedure with Dr Melvin Look. It was nerve-wracking for me to go under general anesthesia (GA) but Dr Look eased my fears with his calm and confident demeanour along with his funny disposition. Had a smooth and successful procedure with attentive pre- and post-op care from Dr Look who has been very patient with all my questions before and after the surgery!

Melody Chong, 45 Patient

In 2018, I met Dr. Sam Peh at Parkway East Hospital when I was admitted for acute urinary retention. Later that year, I underwent a TURP procedure, and some tissues were found to be cancerous. We monitored the situation with 6-monthly PSA readings. In 2020, a PSA spike and MRI revealed two prostate lesions. Dr. Peh explains procedures clearly, using simple language and illustrations, making me feel safe and confident in his care as my urologist.

Philip Whang Patient

I was worried about my constant bloatedness, nauseous & poor appetite in eating. I decided to seek help from Dr Melvin Look and was scheduled very quickly for a scope — to give me peace of mind. Nursing team was also assuring and patient with me when I had questions on insurance & costing. I was very well advised at every step of the way! Thank you Dr Look and to the nurses who attended to me at Pan Asia!
